Chinese ScrollsOur site here is dedicated to the art on scrolls which are found in one form or another in nearly every traditional home in China. These scrolls are usually found in the living room area where the art brings some pleasure along with some special meaning. They are often changed out to reflect the season or just to match the mood of the occupants at the time. The calligraphy or writing was not only meant to be picturesque but often it is in fact poetry. In times past very few people had much entertainment or things to read like we have today, so poetry as an art was a very important means to convey the few pleasures in life. Some poetry was meant to remind the family to cherish what they had, or to remind them of important virtues. Other scrolls were just art or paintings pleasing to the eye which in turn gives pleasure. One of the many ancient Chinese traditions to come into prominence in recent years has been Feng Shui. This is the creating of balance, harmony and prosperity in one's personal environment. Feng & Shui are the Chinese words for wind and water; together they represent a set of rules and concepts that show how our lives are linked to our environment and tell us how to better our life by respecting and balancing things to be in harmony. Several of our scrolls are symbols of some of the concepts of Feng Shui and therefore they have a dual use as both decoration and Feng Shui. We have many different variations of the traditional Oriental wall scroll here. They picture pretty ladies, copies of famous paintings of scenery in China, pictures of animals of myth and legend, and Chinese characters (words) with powerful meanings. Again these scrolls have dual meaning; along with their decorative beauty many have special meanings. Bamboo is not only very nice to look at but it represents another special meaning of significance in Chinese tradition. We sell a lot of these scrolls through our store to customers who like to decorate part of their home with an Oriental style, but when they find out their traditional meaning the scrolls become more valuable than just something to hang on the wall. The scrolls are constructed of top quality materials for long lasting enjoyment. All of the scrolls are 12.5" wide by 33" long. They are easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Hanging them is easy with only a pin because they are very light weight. |
